Approximately one year ago our company started to deal intensively with software management. The main reason was obtaining of a comprehensive overview of the present status of the equipment, location of computers and peripherals and acquisition of information about the users. The final goal was the optimization of investments in the computers and facilitation of the software management.

Reasons for purchasing an audit tool:
First of all we had to perform the computer network inventory taking. However, to perform software audit without an audit tool is almost impossible in such an organization as we are.

The data collection about individual computers in separated workplaces shall be performed remotely (hardware and software detection) and it must be absolutely reliable so that it is not necessary to perform the check personally.
Regular status change checks on individual computers are also important, so that the data are always up-to-date.

Implementation of the audit tool:
The competitive product that we used for the audit at the beginning seemed to be satisfactory at the testing, although not very comfortable.

The data collection and processing was very time-consuming. The installed software detection was successful only upto 75% and hardware detection even as low as 30%. The imported data could not be removed from the database anymore. The program control was quite unclear. The data collection from the remote computers required uselessly high access rights.

The SW and HW test was 100% successful on 250 testing PCs.
So, instead of determination of the quality of the outputs we can concentrate on the results themselves. After the successful test we decided to buy the product and to run it in the live operation.
